Day 8- A photo that makes you angry/sad
This is Banaz Mahmod. She was the victim of an honour killing, murdered by her family at just 20 years of age, for escaping her abusive marriage and falling in love with another man.
You’ve probably heard of honour killings happening in the Middle East, where these deaths seemed to be viewed by Western cultures as mere statistics. Banaz, however, was murdered in the UK. Does this make it more real to you now?
Above is the photo of a beautiful young woman, not much older than the majority of girls here on tumblr. She too obviously took pride in her appearance, and wasn’t some brain-washed idiot. She was intelligent enough to dream of living a free life- one where she would be able to love a man she truly loved. Most of us dream of the same thing too.
Many women in the Middle East are highly educated and intelligent, take great pride in their appearance, and have dreams of achieving greater things in life than being a faceless wife to their husband. So, in many ways, they’re not too different to us- are they?
Think of your best friend. Then, think of her family murdering her because they suspect she’s fallen in love with a boy. How does that make you feel? Then, you find out the police have validated the killing and that her family aren’t going to jail, but are free to continue living as though your best friend never existed. How does THAT make you feel?
Like it or not, that is exactly what is happening to girls, just like you or I, in many countries over the world- and it needs to be stopped.
